Athens Information Technology (AIT) - www.ait.edu.gr

Athens Information Technology (AIT), an education and research center in the fields of information technology, telecommunications, and innovation management, was founded in 2002 by the INTRACOM group of companies as a not-for-profit institution.

To support its education efforts, AIT has a collaborative agreement with Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) and the Information Networking Institute (INI) of Carnegie Mellon to operate a joint Carnegie Mellon-AIT Master of Science in Information Networking (MSIN) Program. AIT also offers two more graduate programs: a Master of Science in Information and Telecommunications Technologies (MSITT), and a Master of Science in Management of Business, Innovation & Technology (MBIT); a PhD program with Aalborg University in Denmark; Executive Training by AIT and with the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University; and annual Summer School programs.

Research at AIT addresses leading edge scientific and technological areas of high interest and challenge. Scientific inquiry is supported by AIT’s rich and technologically advanced infrastructure and highly specialized laboratories. The research activity of AIT has resulted in the formation of significant and valuable synergies with research and educational institutions, corporate R&D labs, and industry in Greece and abroad. Research results are published in international and high quality journals, and are presented in international conferences and other scientific events. They are communicated to students and forthcoming researchers and scientists, through education, and to the industry, through consulting, for exploitation in the creation of innovative products and services.

Network Design and Services (NDS) Group -  http://www.ait.gr/ait_web_site/research_NDS.jsp

The Network Design and Services (NDS) group at the Athens Information Technology (AIT) specializes in the design and delivery of next generation converged network and service infrastructures in support of a wide variety of upcoming and future applications, in the context of which optical networks and network services play a key role. Main topics of the current research agenda of the group include transparency, sustainable scaling, dependability and cost/resource efficiency taking into consideration the increasing heterogeneity in technologies and devices.

In the context of its mission statement, the NDS group conducts high-quality research on future optical network architectures (OCS, OBS) with a vertically wide focus that spans from the protocol level down to device-architecture level. High-end optical laboratory facilities installed at AIT comprising among others a recalculating loop supporting 80 channels C-band 50 GHz channel spacing, a variety of fibre types and 160Gb/s transmission capabilities with 10GHz Mode Locked laser are used for experimental evaluation and prototyping purposes. In addition, the NDS group is strongly active in algorithmic aspects of service provisioning in optical transport networks, with wide-impact contributions to routing, resilience, QoS provisioning and cross-layer optimization and application to cutting-edge Future Internet services like optical Grids. Recently, the research of the NDS group has expanded to provide solutions to network planning problems, addressing the cost-efficient design and dimensioning of optical networks and the efficient placement of specialized equipment. The research activities of the group have led to publications in high-impact international journals and conferences.

The NDS group possesses of a strong participation record in national and EU projects, such as GEYSERS (FP7), BONE (FP7), PHOSPHORUS (FP6), TRIUMPH (FP6), COST291 (FP6), BREATH (FP6), ePhoton/One+ (FP6) and “Autonomous optical networks for global grid computing applications” (GSRT/British Council). Through its valuable contributions to joint projects and its inherent collaborative spirit, the NDS group has built a strong network with leading research institutions and established industrial players, both in the European region and internationally.
